INDIAN G. S. & WADIGATORS MAKE GSL FINALS

The 2 finalists (from left to right) – (IGS) Sunil Agarwal, Ashok Sindhu, Vinay Mehra and Amit Pateria (captain). Wadi Gators - Meng Chan Shin, Ganesan Ponniah, Syed Redzal and Mohammed Firdans Idris

On a thrilling afternoons golf the Indian Golf Society and Wadigators booked their place in the first Golf Society League Final to be held at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club on June 26th.

The 2 societies competed against the Lebanese Golf Society and Gulf Rock respectively with the tightest encounter proving to be the Indian’s victory over the Lebanese. Captain Amit Pateria (13) and partner Vinay Mehra (13) dispatched of opposing captain George Kharillah (2) and Dr. Nawaf Fawaz (8) 3&2. The other pair of Sumil Agarwal (7) and Ashok Sindhu (9) were locked in an epic encounter against Paul Chader (11) and Michael Shararah (10). On the 17th tee (hole 16 due to shotgun start) the match stood all square. If the Lebanese pairing could turn the deadlock into a win the opposing societies would be forced into a sudden death playoff. Sunal Agarwal was the hero striking a 4 iron from almost 200 yards to within 30 feet of the hole. A cool 2 putt for a par bettered the Labanese pair who both missed the green resulting in a pair of 5’s presenting an unassailable lead for the Indian Golf Society with 1 hole left to play. Gulf Rock lost both their matches (3&2 and 2 & 1) as an irrepressible Wadi Gators team, who in the absence of team captain Andrew Say marched confidently to the final.

The final and 3rd & 4th place play off for the Golf Society League supported by BMW, SAIF-Zone and World Wide Golf will be held at 13.30 on Saturday 26th June. Running alongside the main event will be a captains and sponsors event climaxing in a presentation immediately after play.

WADI GATORS & LGS PROGRESS

In the final matches of the Sharjah Golf & Shootiing Clubs Golf Society Leagues World the Wadi Gators and Lebanese Golf Societies progressed from the Wide Golf and Sharjah Golf &Shooting Club leagues to the semi final, knock out stages.

On the final days play all 6 teams in the World Wide Golf League had a chance to qualify, but the bottom 3 teams required a complex succession of results if they were progress. League leaders, by 2 points the Wadi Gators faced bottom of the league DUBAL who’s only chance of taking top spot was to win both their matches. However the Wadi Gators teams of Mohammed Firdaus (18) and Meng Chan Shu (16) and the pair of Ganesan Ponniah (18) and Andrew Say (11) were too strong on the day winning 6&5 and 2&1 respectively.

From the other matches 3rd placed BIGS did what they needed in order to stand a chance of winning the league as they won both their matches against a Dubai Petroleum team weakened by a few notable absentees.

SGB were in second place going into the final days play and also needed a minimum of 3 points in order to stand a chance of coming out on top. Captain Joe Farina (14) wanted his players to post a strong start to put pressure on the Wadi Gators. However they came undone against a resilient Black Stallions team headed by King Stallion Trevor Varri (9), the Stallions winning 1 match and halving the 2nd. One of the Stallions best performances of the GSL season.

In the SGSC league Lebanese captain George Khairallah (2) enjoyed relaxed game against a Halcrow team of Shane Grooves (24) and Adrian Manning (24) safe in the knowledge that his team had an unassailable lead in the league and would be in the semi final draw set to be played on June 5th.

At the presentation SGSC Director of Golf Martin Duff thanked all the captains for their tireless work over the previous 5 months submitting teams and organizing handicaps. As a show of thanks he invited the captains from all 24 teams to participate in a complimentary golf day to coincide with the final to be held on June 26th. Duff also thanked sponsors World Wide Golf, SAIF Zone and BMW for their invaluable support in what had been a phenomenally successful first season for the GSL.

GULF ROCK AND IGS MAKE THE GRADE IN FINAL DAY THRILLER

The BMW and SAIF - Zone leagues of Sharjah Golf & Shooting Clubs Golf Society League could not have endured a more exciting final round climax.

The final league fixture, before the knock out phases, conjured up some intriguing ties with 1st place playing 2nd place and 3rd playing 4th in the BMW League with all 4 societies have a chance to qualify. The Etihad Pilots Society (TEPS) were in control as league leaders, however 1 slip would mean all the other 3 teams had a chance to qualify. In TEPS match against Gulf Rock both matches were extremely tight all the way with both matches going down the final hole. Gulf Rock, lead by Mel Stewart (16) came out on top with a 1up win in 1 match and an all square result in the second match. This meant in the match between Mott McDonald (3rd place) and The Filipino Golfers Society (TFGS – 4th place) if either could manage 2 victories the door was open for either side to win the BMW league. Both matches were again tight with no more that 2 holes difference at any time. With 2 holes to play both matches were all square and a couple of strokes of genius from either team would have seen them triumph. All players were aware of all the other matches status courtesy of the mobile leader boards but unfortunately for both teams the spoils were halved at 1 win each meaning Gulf Rock’s heroics on the final hole proved just enough.

In the other BMW match the Nepalese Golf Society had their best day of the series winning both their matches to take the 6 point maximum off the bottom league position and up to 5th place.

The SAIF – Zone league had become a 2 horse race between the Indian Golf Society (IGS) and the KEGS. The KEGS sat 5 points behind leaders IGS meaning a whitewash was their only option if the were to make the semifinals on June 5th. To everyone’s amazement IGS’s 2nd team withdrew at the last minute gifting the KEGS 3 of the 6 points they needed. In the remaining match the KEGS got of to a flyer going 3 up through 4 holes. The IGS team remained un-phased and fought back to all square through 14 holes. There were however more twists in the tail. The KEGS won the penultimate hole (hole 14 in a shotgun start) meaning a half on the last would secure qualification. Nerves got the better of KEGS pairing Peter Vanwkye (9) and Neil Baun (20) as the both found the tree on the right side of hole 15. IGS captain Ahmed Pateria (13) managed to keep his cool, playing the stoke index 1 hole in regulation and with him receiving a shot his net 4 proved untouchable.

In other matched the Dubai Welsh Society won 1 and lost one against opponents FIGME while the JAGS & DAGS also shared the honors.

At the presentation SGSC Director of Golf thanked all the societies and their captain for their support over the previous 5 months and congratulated Gulf Rock and IGS on their achievements.

Lebanese Society Seal SGSC League as World Wide Golf League is Set for Epic Finish

The fourth round of fixtures for the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club Golf Society Leagues supported by SAIF Zone, BMW And World Wide Golf were held on Saturday 10th April. The World Wide Golf League and SGSC league were in action in the qualifying rounds penultimate matches.

Run away leaders in the SGSC league, The Lebanese Golf Society, cemented their qualification with 6&4 and 5&4 wins over bottom of the league COGS. Performance of the day came from 13 year old Paul Saad, who off a 10 handicap, scored and impressive 69 gross to dispatch a somewhat bewildered Diana (23) and James Brown.(25). These 2 wins gave George Khairallah’s (6) team a 9 point lead with fixture remaining booking his team a place in the semi finals on June 5th.

The Lebanese team of (L-R) Hisham Shahmmas, Marwam Rizk, George Khairallah and Paul Saad after their 6 – 0 victory over the COGS which secured the SGSC League title

The World Wide Golf League is a very different affair and is set to go down to the wire. The Wadi Gators recorded the only 6 – 0 whitewash of the day as they beat league leaders the BIGS 5&4 and 1up to jump from 2nd place to top spot and relegate the BIGS to 3rd. But for a 3 putt on the final green to lose their match 1 down the BIGS team of Larry Burke (22) and Mark Anderson (20) may have recorded a vital half which would have left the top 3 teams within 2 points of each other.

Sharjah Golfing Buddies who got off to a slow start in the league are finishing like a train as they beat Dubai Petroleum 4 -1. SGB moved from 5th to 2nd as a result of their win.

All three Societies will fancy their chances of progressing to the knock out stages but on paper new leaders the Wadi Gators have the easiest final match. They face tied bottom DUBAL while SGB face the 4th placed Stallions. The BIGS need to recover quickly from their defeat and face Dubai Petroleum who are also tied bottom of the league.

The next round for the SGSC & WWG Leagues is on Saturday 15th May, 1pm shotgun. For more information on the Golf Society League, The Golf Society Cup or any of the facilities at SGSC please call 06 548777 and speak to Martin Duff.

Round 3 proves moving day in SAIF Zone & BMW leagues

The third round of the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Clubs Golf Society League supported by SAIF - Zone, BMW and World Wide Golf proved to be a time to fight for pole position as The Kegs, Gulf Rock and Mott MacDonald secured all 6 points in their matches to move into strong positions within their respective league tables.

In total 12 societies competed in the 3nd round at SGSC in a pairs, betterball match play format. Although the weather was overcast with sand in the air, the standard of golf played over the Harradine designed course was of an exceptionally high level. This was emphasized by the margin of some of the victories, three 8&7’s a 6&5 and a 5&3.

Leaders: KEGS & Etihad Pilots Club

In the BMW league, Graham Purvis (24) and Eric Owen (12) of the Welsh society dispatched Abdul (24) and Christine Khan (28) of the JAGS 8&7. Their other encounter was a tight affair, ending in a half. Neil Bam (19) and Ricky Whiting (14) of the Kegs also won 8&7 over the Jags. Peter Gaskin (14) (undefeated in 3 matches) and Drew Steedman (8) had a 2&1 victory over JAGS pairing of Chris Kelly (13) and Peter Bauer (18). Eric Matabang (15) and Mario Marimon (18) of the FIGME society took the first points in the event from a very strong Indian Society team, eventually winning 2 up. Vikram Arora and Amit Pateria convincingly prevailed in there other match 6&5.

The Saif - Zone League produced some inspired golf, with Gulf Rock and Mott MacDonald winning both their matches. Play of the day must go to Mel Stewart (14) and Lars Liden (17) as there putters were too hot to handle in their 8&7 victory. Norhadi Alias (14) and Chang Pen Wah (16) from the Singapore Community fought bravely, only to lose 1up to Barry Nefdt (18) and Wilhelm Liden (13). Shot of the day, however, must go to Steven Blandford (24) of Mott MacDonald as his 135 yard 9 iron approach found the hole for a rare eagle, net 0 on the par 4 5th. Modest as ever 24 handicapper Blandford commented “I knew it was in the moment I hit it, I rarely miss from 135 yards – its my favourite yardage”. This moment of golfing perfection catapulted the Mott MacDonald pair to a 5&3 victory over their Nepalese counterparts. The other Nepalese pair of Nigel (17) and Purna Sharma (0) fought hard, only to be defeated by the very strong pairing of Mark Dupree (22) and Rob Russel (22) 2&1.

Steven Blandford: Happy

The Etihad Pilots of Hisham Yousuf (10) and Rizal Shuaib (16) landed a 4&3 victory over Arnel Valencia (19) and Rommel Camara (23) from the Filipino Society, whereas the other pairing of Brian Mullen (0) and Matt Dowell (14) had a competitive but gentlemanly half with Joseph Mogallos (15) and Dino Mutuc (24).

Move of the day came from the Mouse Bumping Bears who won both their matches against The COGS to take all 6 points and move up into a tie for the lead with the DAPS and The Lebanese Golf Society on 9 points. Halcrow lying on 6 points are not out of the shake up to qualify for the semi-finals but Darjeeling (3 points) and the COGS need an exceptional finish if they are to make any impression on top spot.

The World Wide Golf League is lead after the first 2 fixtures by The BIGS. The Wadi Gators sit in second place on 7 points after claiming 3 points in the second round thanks to a 6&5 victory by Rosslee Wahid (18) and Andrew Say (14).

Still very much in the hunt on 6 points are Dubai Aluminum and Dubai Petroleum, with The Black Stallions and SGB needing whitewashes against higher ranked opponents in the final 3 fixtures if they are to make the semi-finals, scheduled for the first Saturday in June.

All 48 competitors pose for a group photo prior to their round 2 matches

In total 12 societies competed in the 2nd round at SGSC. Although the weather was overcast, the standard of golf played over the Harradine designed course was a lot brighter. This was emphasized by the attire of the Singapore Community Society, dressed in matching white trousers and red polo shirts. As the matches progressed it was evident the true spirit of matchplay was the going to be the winner.

The BMW league produced 3 teams winning both their matches. The JAGS pair of Peter Bauer(18) and Andy Sansome(20) had a strong win over Ronald Javier(24) and Eric Matabang(18), whereas Chris Kelly(13) and Richard Lyne(19) triumphed on the 17th green over Daniel Alforte(18) and Rudy Laguna(15).

B.I.G.S., DAPS & LEBANESE GOLF SOCIETY LEAD SOCIETY GOLF LEAGES

On Saturday, 23rd January 2010, the World Wide Golf (WWG) and Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club (SGSC) leagues kicked off their matches in the Golf Society League supported by BMW and SAIF-Zone.

All 48 competitors pose for a group photo prior to their round 1 matches

3 societies established a clear lead in their respective divisions – B.I.G.S., DAPS and the Lebanese Golf Society all of whom didn’t give much of a change to their competing societies.

All 12 societies arrived on time for their matches, some of the societies showing their team spirit in having ALL 4 players in the same shirts proudly displaying their society logos. Particularly impressive were the WadiGators, who made their shirts exclusively for the 2010 Golf Society League.

The WWG league has a clear leader after 2 matches. The B.I.G.S., with the pairing of James (24) and Larry Burke (22), had a tight fixture against the Sharjah Golfing Buddies represented by Barry Furlong (19) & Malcolm Rees (18).  After a titanic struggle the BIGS emerged victorious 1 up. The other match was also won by the B.I.G.S., this time on the penultimate hole with a final score of 2 on 1.

The Black Stallions represented by head Donkey Trevor Varri (6) and compatriots Julian Evans (9), Steve Hill (4) and Keith Evans (5) had to face the ‘scary’ WadiGators.  Two extremely tight matches ended in a 2 and 1 win for the WadiGators while the other match provided the only tie of the afternoon.

However, the Black Stallions had good reason to celebrate: Steve Hill took his 9 iron on the ‘not so easy’ hole number 12, a full swing later and the ball was in the hole!!!! Congratulations again Steve!!!

The other match in the WWG league between DUBAL and the Dubai Petroleum Golf Society was tied, both teams managed 1 win and 1 loss for a 3 point total.

The SGSC league has 2 clear leaders: The Lebanese Golf Society and the DAPS, both with a 6 points total.
The Lebanese Golf Society, headed by charismatic Chairman George Kharella (6) took on the Darjeeling Golf Society with both matches being won by margins of 3 and 1 and 3 and 2.
The DAPS did not let go of their opponents as they destroyed the out of form COGS 6 and 5 in both their fixtures.
The other match was fought between the MBB Golf Society and the Halcrow Golf Society.  One clear win was achieved by David Finley (6) & Eddie Ramage (5) (MBB) over Jett Smith (11) & Adrian Manning (24) while Peter Disher (10) & Chris Penabad (13) (Halcrow) didn’t give up until they won their match against Andrew Trebilco (4) & T. Villianieux (4) (MBB) 3 and 2.

Round 2 of the Golf Society League fixtures will continue in February. The SAIF-Zone and BMW leagues will play on Saturday, the 6th of February and WWG and SGSC leagues on the 20th of February.
