Round 3 proves moving day in SAIF Zone & BMW leagues

The third round of the Sharjah Golf & Shooting Clubs Golf Society League supported by SAIF - Zone, BMW and World Wide Golf proved to be a time to fight for pole position as The Kegs, Gulf Rock and Mott MacDonald secured all 6 points in their matches to move into strong positions within their respective league tables.

In total 12 societies competed in the 3nd round at SGSC in a pairs, betterball match play format. Although the weather was overcast with sand in the air, the standard of golf played over the Harradine designed course was of an exceptionally high level. This was emphasized by the margin of some of the victories, three 8&7’s a 6&5 and a 5&3.

Leaders: KEGS & Etihad Pilots Club

In the BMW league, Graham Purvis (24) and Eric Owen (12) of the Welsh society dispatched Abdul (24) and Christine Khan (28) of the JAGS 8&7. Their other encounter was a tight affair, ending in a half. Neil Bam (19) and Ricky Whiting (14) of the Kegs also won 8&7 over the Jags. Peter Gaskin (14) (undefeated in 3 matches) and Drew Steedman (8) had a 2&1 victory over JAGS pairing of Chris Kelly (13) and Peter Bauer (18). Eric Matabang (15) and Mario Marimon (18) of the FIGME society took the first points in the event from a very strong Indian Society team, eventually winning 2 up. Vikram Arora and Amit Pateria convincingly prevailed in there other match 6&5.

The Saif - Zone League produced some inspired golf, with Gulf Rock and Mott MacDonald winning both their matches. Play of the day must go to Mel Stewart (14) and Lars Liden (17) as there putters were too hot to handle in their 8&7 victory. Norhadi Alias (14) and Chang Pen Wah (16) from the Singapore Community fought bravely, only to lose 1up to Barry Nefdt (18) and Wilhelm Liden (13). Shot of the day, however, must go to Steven Blandford (24) of Mott MacDonald as his 135 yard 9 iron approach found the hole for a rare eagle, net 0 on the par 4 5th. Modest as ever 24 handicapper Blandford commented “I knew it was in the moment I hit it, I rarely miss from 135 yards – its my favourite yardage”. This moment of golfing perfection catapulted the Mott MacDonald pair to a 5&3 victory over their Nepalese counterparts. The other Nepalese pair of Nigel (17) and Purna Sharma (0) fought hard, only to be defeated by the very strong pairing of Mark Dupree (22) and Rob Russel (22) 2&1.

Steven Blandford: Happy

The Etihad Pilots of Hisham Yousuf (10) and Rizal Shuaib (16) landed a 4&3 victory over Arnel Valencia (19) and Rommel Camara (23) from the Filipino Society, whereas the other pairing of Brian Mullen (0) and Matt Dowell (14) had a competitive but gentlemanly half with Joseph Mogallos (15) and Dino Mutuc (24).

The next Golf Society League fixtures will be held on Saturday 20th of March. This will see the other 2 leagues, the World Wide Golf and SGSC leagues play their 3rd rounds. The 4 winners of each league will progress to the Semi Finals to be held at SGSC on June 5th, with the final and 3rd & 4th place playoffs being held on June 26th. In the SGSC League round 1 co-leaders. The Dubai Amateur Peacocks Society pairing of Steve Barker (9) and Paul McCarthy (12) lost the DAP’s first match of the series 3 & 2 to the Darjeeling duo of Chris Bridle (22) and Doug Griebenouw (10). In the other match team captain Michael Estafanous (17) and Richal Paul (17) edged out their opponents from Darjeeling 1up in an epic encounter that was tight from start to finish.

Fellow co-leaders in the SGSC League, The Lebanese Golf Society also lost their first match of the season as captain George Kharillah (5) and Ghaleb Farha (10) were thumped 7 & 6 by an in form Peter Disher (11) and Guy Newby (24) of Halcrow. The other Lebanese pairing of juniors Anthony Saad (2) and Paul Saad (15) returned the compliment by dispatching of their opponents from Halcrow by a GSL record margin of 9 & 7.

Move of the day came from the Mouse Bumping Bears who won both their matches against The COGS to take all 6 points and move up into a tie for the lead with the DAPS and The Lebanese Golf Society on 9 points. Halcrow lying on 6 points are not out of the shake up to qualify for the semi-finals but Darjeeling (3 points) and the COGS need an exceptional finish if they are to make any impression on top spot.

The World Wide Golf League is lead after the first 2 fixtures by The BIGS. The BIGS also lost their first fixture with James Burke (22) and Marc Anderson (20) losing to Dubai Aluminium pairing Alex Tivi (13) and Sabu Thomas (17) 2 & 1. The other confrontation was a little more one sided as Larry Burke (22) and Gerry Guinnan (8) strode past their opponents from DUBAL 5&4.

The Wadi Gators sit in second place on 7 points after claiming 3 points in the second round thanks to a 6&5 victory by Rosslee Wahid (18) and Andrew Say (14).

Still very much in the hunt on 6 points are Dubai Aluminum and Dubai Petroleum, with The Black Stallions and SGB needing whitewashes against higher ranked opponents in the final 3 fixtures if they are to make the semi-finals, scheduled for the first Saturday in June.

All 48 competitors pose for a group photo prior to their round 2 matches

In total 12 societies competed in the 2nd round at SGSC. Although the weather was overcast, the standard of golf played over the Harradine designed course was a lot brighter. This was emphasized by the attire of the Singapore Community Society, dressed in matching white trousers and red polo shirts. As the matches progressed it was evident the true spirit of matchplay was the going to be the winner.

The BMW league produced 3 teams winning both their matches. The JAGS pair of Peter Bauer(18) and Andy Sansome(20) had a strong win over Ronald Javier(24) and Eric Matabang(18), whereas Chris Kelly(13) and Richard Lyne(19) triumphed on the 17th green over Daniel Alforte(18) and Rudy Laguna(15).

Peter Gaskin(14) and Dave Minchin(22) of the KEGS had a commanding victory over the DAGS premier players of Tony Stafford(4) and Scott Kerins(8), where as Pieter Van Wyk(22) and Kevin Storey(22) worked well together for a 5 and 4 result.

Although Hugh Bishop(21) and Mark Corcoran(16) of the Welsh Society played well together they fell prey to the superior scoring of Suneel Agarwal(16) and Ashok Sindhu(13). Their other match was much tighter and eventually went in the Indian Societies favor 2 and 1.

In the Saif Zone League Etihad Airways took full points from the Nepalese Society.

A win each for Mott MacDonald and the Singapore Community split the points, as both teams were level with only a few holes remaining. Carlos Bengco(18) and Larry Mendoza(20) of the Filipino Golfers Society had a good half with Barry Nefdt(18) and Mel Stewart(16) of Gulf Rock.

The next Golf Society League fixtures will be held on Saturday 20th of February. This will see the other 2 leagues, the World Wide Golf and SGSC leagues play their 2nd round of fixtures. The 4 winners of each league will progress to the Semi Finals to be held at SGSC on June 5th.

B.I.G.S., DAPS & LEBANESE GOLF SOCIETY LEAD SOCIETY GOLF LEAGES

On Saturday, 23rd January 2010, the World Wide Golf (WWG) and Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club (SGSC) leagues kicked off their matches in the Golf Society League supported by BMW and SAIF-Zone.

All 48 competitors pose for a group photo prior to their round 1 matches

3 societies established a clear lead in their respective divisions – B.I.G.S., DAPS and the Lebanese Golf Society all of whom didn’t give much of a change to their competing societies.

All 12 societies arrived on time for their matches, some of the societies showing their team spirit in having ALL 4 players in the same shirts proudly displaying their society logos. Particularly impressive were the WadiGators, who made their shirts exclusively for the 2010 Golf Society League.

The WWG league has a clear leader after 2 matches. The B.I.G.S., with the pairing of James (24) and Larry Burke (22), had a tight fixture against the Sharjah Golfing Buddies represented by Barry Furlong (19) & Malcolm Rees (18).  After a titanic struggle the BIGS emerged victorious 1 up. The other match was also won by the B.I.G.S., this time on the penultimate hole with a final score of 2 on 1.

The Black Stallions represented by head Donkey Trevor Varri (6) and compatriots Julian Evans (9), Steve Hill (4) and Keith Evans (5) had to face the ‘scary’ WadiGators.  Two extremely tight matches ended in a 2 and 1 win for the WadiGators while the other match provided the only tie of the afternoon.

However, the Black Stallions had good reason to celebrate: Steve Hill took his 9 iron on the ‘not so easy’ hole number 12, a full swing later and the ball was in the hole!!!! Congratulations again Steve!!!

The other match in the WWG league between DUBAL and the Dubai Petroleum Golf Society was tied, both teams managed 1 win and 1 loss for a 3 point total.

The SGSC league has 2 clear leaders: The Lebanese Golf Society and the DAPS, both with a 6 points total.
The Lebanese Golf Society, headed by charismatic Chairman George Kharella (6) took on the Darjeeling Golf Society with both matches being won by margins of 3 and 1 and 3 and 2.
The DAPS did not let go of their opponents as they destroyed the out of form COGS 6 and 5 in both their fixtures.
The other match was fought between the MBB Golf Society and the Halcrow Golf Society.  One clear win was achieved by David Finley (6) & Eddie Ramage (5) (MBB) over Jett Smith (11) & Adrian Manning (24) while Peter Disher (10) & Chris Penabad (13) (Halcrow) didn’t give up until they won their match against Andrew Trebilco (4) & T. Villianieux (4) (MBB) 3 and 2.

Round 2 of the Golf Society League fixtures will continue in February. The SAIF-Zone and BMW leagues will play on Saturday, the 6th of February and WWG and SGSC leagues on the 20th of February.
