Malaysia Truly Asia Men’s and Ladies Club Championship



Yassin & Choi Lift Sgsc Crowns
Ramsey Yassin and Kyeung Ja Choi won the Malaysia Truly Asia Men’s and Ladies Club Championships supported by Orient Travel at Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club over the weekend (29th & 30th January).

The pair, both lead their respective categories after day 1 with 3 handicapper Yassin producing a gross 1st round score of 74 (2 over par). Yassin backed up his 4 shot overnight lead with a strong start in the second round as nearest challenge George Liu fell away. The Lebanese maintained his form and concentration all the way until the 36th hole, to which point he had an unassailable lead enabling him to enjoy his walk up the final hole to rapturous applause alongside his caddying wife. A 5 over par second round total of 77 gave him an aggregate score of 151, a new Championship record. Taiwanese 6 handicapper Lui finished 2nd on 163 while Indian Amiya Ranjan enjoyed a strong finish on his way to third place.

K. J. Choi (24) had a quiet start in the first round, but her steady and consistent form prevailed over her nearest competitors, the streaky Sue Bargh (23) and inconsistent Diana Brown (24).

In the Men’s net categories Dutchman Erik Roeterdink (16) triumphed with net rounds of 71 and 76. Briton Jim Brown (26) returned a weekend low net score of 70 in his second round to overtake Tony Andrews (22) into third place and push Martin Geskes (22) out of the prizes into 4th. Zina Butzova (32) collected the ladies net prize for the second straight year after completing rounds of 78 and 77.

At the presentation Yassin thanked committed sponsor Malaysia Truly Asia and Orient Travel, also all the other competitors who took part in the second edition of the event were expressed the same way of appreciation.

Orient Travel - Thai Airways Monthly Medal



Siddaway wins number two!
Friday 22nd January saw the Orient Travel – Thai Airways monthly medal return for its monthly competition, played from the championship tees.

In extremely difficult conditions Mike Siddaway (17) won his second Orient Travel – Thai Airways monthly medal of the season with a net 75 beating his nearest rivals by one. Siddaway’s round was mixed with some excellent play, 5 double bogeys in his round stopped him from scoring lower. This victory now sees Siddaway lead the Orient Travel – Malaysia Truly Asia Order of Merit with 4 events remaining.

After a serious accident South African golfer Pieter Botha (11) played his first tournament in six months and capped it off with a runner up place with a net 76. Botha’s round included a mixture of pars, bogeys and two double bogeys. Pieter recorded 7 gross pars in his round.

3rd place was awarded to Mel Stewart (15) who lost second place on coutback also scored a net 76.  

Best gross was won by SGSC regular George Liu (6) who scored a gross 86.

The Orient Travel –Thai Airways order of merit now has 4 rounds left with the penultimate round to be played on Friday 14th May.

The top 5 after four events are:-
1st – Mike Siddaway 85pts.
2nd – George Liu 69.5pts.
3rd – Ramsey Yassin 67pts.
4th – Mel Stewart 60pts.
5th – Bill Buchanan 54pts.

Monthly Midweek Madness - 15 February 2010

SINGH WINS WITH AMAZING FINISH
On Monday 15th February Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club hosted the bi weekly Coral Beach Resort Sharjah Midweek Madness. The day’s format was a 9 hole stableford competition played from the yellow tees.

KK Singh (20) won his first competition at SGSC by scoring 20 points for the 9 holes. Singh started at the par 3 12th and through 8 holes he had scored 15 points. Playing his last the 380 yard par 4 11th. Singh’s drive found the centre of the fairway and with a medium iron to the green he holed his second for a gross eagle, giving him 5 points on that hole and his first victory.

Runner up was won by Ramsey Yassin (3) with 18 points. Yassin’s 9 holes included 6 pars, 2 bogeys and one birdie at the short par 3 12th to give him outright second spot.
3rd place was won by Sabu Thomas (17) who scored 17 points. Thomas’s highlight of his round was 2 gross pars at the 17th and 18th holes giving him 6 points.

BMW Members & Guests Social - 08 January 2010



FINNISH PAIR TAKE THE HONOURS!
On Friday 8th January the BMW Members & Guest Social returned for its monthly competition. Playing two different formats over the 18 holes from the white and yellow tees over 25 competitors competed.

Finnish golfers Tom Jaatinen (8) & Varkko Ruka (19) won the opening 9 hole betterball bogey competition by defeating the golf course two up. There round included no dropped shots but birdies at the 2nd and 5th helped them to their fist victory at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club.

Playing a betterball medal for the back 9 competition Oliver Crisostomo (18) and Sri Lankan playing partner Ranga Jeeva Srinath (PC) stormed around the back 9 in net 30. They recorded net birdies at the 11th, 12th, 14th, and 18th. The highlight of their round was a net eagle at the 544 yard par 5 15th.

Mike Holliday (12) won both the longest drive and nearest the pin competition after two finely struck shots helped him to pick up two vouchers for the pro shop.
